Traveling Reports

Nagoya & Kyoto, Japan

I visited Japan for about ten days during the first half of September 1995. Although I was there for family matters, I was also able to meet some people I initially met on the Internet.
This page is intended for the people I met in Kyoto, so they can watch some of the pictures my girlfriend and I took.
Others may find it nice to see these pictures too. But of course, I also wanted to show off... :-)

In Kyoto I met Thomas Robb, Brad DeMond and Masatsugu ('Mark') Nagata. The first two I know because they use software I wrote: SimpleWave.
I know Masatsugu because of translation work we did and we both tested some of the same software.

Kyoto

The next two pictures are some of the best ones we took during our trip. The picture below was taken while my girlfriend and I were sitting on two concrete boats in the Kamogawa River in Kyoto. As you can see, the weather was great!

Another beautiful spot in Kyoto is the Kinkakuji Temple, in the north of Kyoto. In one of its ponds is the Golden Pavillion, covered with gold leaf.

Accidentally we passed one computer shop which sells Macintosh. Since I am a Mac fan, I had to take a picture. Not just because Mac resellers were rare...

Internet People

As said, we met three people in Kyoto I knew from the Internet. Below are some pictures of them.

Thomas Robb worked at Kyoto Sangyo University and teaches English. He showed us around Kyoto for one day, including Kinkakuji Temple pictured above.

Because Brad DeMond was rather busy, also teaching English to Japanese students, we only met him for one evening and started with diner at an Indian restaurant. Later we had a cup of coffee at a typical American shop: Mr. Donut.

Masatsugu Nagata helped us a lot while preparing for the trip to Japan. For example, he got us permission to visit the Imperial Villa, gave some good tips on what else to visit, etc.

Unfortunately, we forgot to take a good picture of Masatsugu, so here is just a clip.

And to compensate, here is a better picture. The gaijins in the background are trying to eat noodles with chopsticks...

It was really great to feel welcome in a country which is so unlike The Netherlands and with a completely different language. Many thanks to Tom, Brad and Mark!
