Description
Plan a few days off for this multi-day cycling route and dive into the history of the New Dutch Waterline defense line, nominated as a World Heritage Site.
Admire the forts from the outside and, if possible, take a tour of a fort to learn about the history of these structures.
This sturdy ride is not the shortest route, but you will cycle past almost all fortresses of the Defense Line of Amsterdam. The rivers sometimes provide a major detour, look at the sailing times of various bicycle ferries and deviate from the route if desired. You can drive the route in both directions or drive it in parts.
Only the four Lunettes near Utrecht and the Defense Work near Vreeswijk are not on the route, but otherwise you can see all the fortresses of this defense line from your bike. In some cases a detour is taken to show more (different) parts. At the rivers Lek and Waal you can deviate from the route with regard to ferry services or bridges, depending on the season.
