2.5 guilder coin, 1979, front and back. Special edition to commemorate the Union of Utrecht (de Unie van Utrecht). Reign (1948-1980) of Queen Juliana (1909-2004). Seven rebellious Northern Dutch counties formed an alliance - the Union of Utrecht - against the Spanish occupation in 1579. The union can be seen as the starting point of the Republic of the Netherlands (de Republiek der Nederlanden) and the Netherlands as an independent state.
